Favorite adresses in Canggu Bali

After 15 months here in Bali I've found some great spots. And I get a lot of questions about good places, so this is my list of things to do, see, eat and stay. This post will be updated regularly.

Areas:

First make a pick between the beach or the jungle. It's not a great distance but some prefer one to the other. I like to live close to the beach and visit the inland.

The beach: The tourism started close to the airport and have been spreading beach per beach, up north on the west side. Kuta is the first beach. Crowded, touristy and I pretty much never go there. Next beach is Seminyak. A little bit more upscale, good restaurants and better shops but still pretty much crazy. I prefer the Canggu area that is even more up North - it's growing rapidly but still feels softer and more hipsterish. Pererenan is one step more north and slower more local, very nice - takes 5 min to the main Canggu happenings road of Batu Bolong.

Ubud: Is the town about an hour inland (from the beach) also a cultural x-pat hub. It's green and vibrant with some excellent spots. Eat Pray Lovish. I have not been much ut love going there. Don't miss Monkey Forrest - its beautiful and full of , yes you guessed right - monkeys. Tegallalang rice terraces north of Ubudare spectacular - touristy but still worth it. Campuhan Ridge Walkalso nice. But just the town it self is more lush and green. Also take a course at beutiful Gaya Ceramicsand eat a fantastic vegetarian lunch at Moksaclose by. Spare Rib lovers should visit Naughty Nurisat night.

Canggu Area

Canggu has one main road - Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong - down to the Beach (beach =pantai) also called Batu Bolong. On the main street are lots of good shops and restaurants.

Old Mans Big restaurant that turns into noisy bar at night named after the surf break Old Mans that is out in the water on the right side of the large rock. But just ok food (big servings though) and sometimes the staff is a bit snorky, nice ambiance in genera and you see the beach. Lot of space- ping pong table and so on. They also have a local design market - one Sunday every month. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.117X

Plant Cartel Vegan modern diner hamburger joint. Pink buns, nice doughnuts and great food with happy interior. 75, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong

Fish bone Local Cool stylish place with good fish dishes. Also a good kids menu and nice little garden at the back. We like the fish tacos (taco version of fish and chips) 99, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong.

Moana Fish eatery Hawaiian inspired fish place. We have a obsession with their Maui Poke Bowl and they have this chocolate dessert (called something like a breigadeiro but it's not?!) its amlost like getting chocolate cake batter - but soooo good. Pantai Batu Bolong St No.28

Black Sand Brewery A pretty new place (late 2019) cool to just go and have drinks and some snacks or for a full dinner. Best Burrata on the island (actually one of the best I had outside of Italy), meat lovers says the meat is good. I like the starters like tuna flat tacos, and the vegetarian pizzetas. And yes it's a brewery so they have beer but I don't know anything about that. Jl .Pantai Batu Bolong pretty high up almost at Pepitos towards Jl Raya Canggu.

Lacalita Bar Y Cocina Mexican food, tacos & Margerithas happy hour every day. Excellent churros and good food. Try the jackfruit tacos. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.68

Betelnut Cafe Small ac room down on the street - great big terrasse on top. Have everything from breakfast to dinner. Tacos to bowls and burgers but fresh and with an own spin to it. We order take away from here all the time. (Image from here) Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.60

The Common Our favorite lunch place.We come here all the time. I love to eat the Teriyaki Salmon but pretty much everything is good here also the desserts. 65 Jalan Batu Bolong, Canggu

Luigis Hot Pizza I don't know if its the BESt pizza around (maybbe Crispy's are better) but it is a very cool place and nice location. They have a ping pong table and serves pizza by the meter if you like it like that. A lot of space for kids to roam. Other pizza places - Fabrica & Crispy Pizza also ok. Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu

Deus Ex Machina Huge place, surf & motobike shop, a small skate ramp at the back. Next to Luigis pizza. Very cool space but the food is unfortunately bad. But check out the store! Jl. Batu Mejan No.8, Canggu

The Shady Shack Very cosy garden and plant based food. Shakes and juices of all sorts. Just off batu bolong - close to Echo beach. Jl. Tanah Barak No.57, Canggu

Mad Pops Ice Cream Also insanely cool place and I do like the ice cream and so does my kids. Well they would eat anything you basically give the name ice cream but anyways... Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.48, Canggu

Crate Cafe A box of concrete with hip people and smoothies to die for. Actually almost full from morning to afternoon (when they close) but a great spot for people watching. They also have a clothes store next doors and it's the same owners as the concrete mega cool bar Pretty Poison(imagine concrete and a big skate bowl in the middle of the bar - mad max-ish) And also check out Gypsylandsfestivals for special parties. Jl. Canggu Padang Linjong No.49, Canggu, (just off batu bolong)

Peloton Supershop - Berawa Plant based cafe & bicycle store. Very good food and nice place. I never have salad for lunch but I do here. Jl. Pantai Berawa No.46,

Milk N Madu - Berawa Another beautiful place to eat. Food is good, not oh la la I'll faint great. But I like it. They have pizza Tuesdays that I never tried but is supposed to be good. A little playground for small kids at the back. Just in front of Milk and Madu is Roti Daal - a good and simple Indian restaurant. Go for it! Jl. Pantai Berawa No.52

Tamora Gallery - Berawa Hip Mini mall in the open with cool stores and great food. Newly opened Aug 18 so new stores/restaurants comes all the time. A great big playground and a mini but good skate bowl at the back. They have kids Sundays and movie nights as well. We love the Shmurgers Burgers, the Japanese restaurant is also good. Jl. La Laguna Bali - Berawa Gypsy inspired beach Club - their words, I don't agree with using the term for commercial fun... Small caravans, good food lovely vibes. All wood is painted on with flowers and such. Trés cool. And a nice beach kind of empty beach in front of it all. Once a month the also have a market here that is nice to check out. Jalan Pantai Kayu Putih Berawa Canggu (close to Berawa Beach)

Jl Pererenan is the fastest growing hood of Canggu. There are new restaurants almost every day. People like Pescado, Born Bright and Monsieur Spoon just opened a new spot here. Wanna get your nails did? Check out the local favorite and eco friendly paints at Maria curau

Warung Kezia - Pererenan Right image - a small garden in the rice fields. Laid back and good local indonesian food for a great price. Pretty easy. Also have some western food. Jalan munduk kedungu no :18, Banjar Pengembungan, Pererenan

Front Cafe - Pererenan Great little coffee place in Pererenan with nice lunches. Open from 8-15. Jl. Pantai Pererenan No.72, Pererenan

Warung Sushitoo & Sizzle Wraps A little hidden gem, jusrt a stand next to Jalan Raya Munggu By Pass Tanah Lot Mengwi Cemagi Mengwi is this Sushi place. Really good food and if you don't want sushi Sizzle Wraps - mexican food chain is just next doors... They have small stalls all around Canggu. Goos and simpe food. Tacos, tortillas, quesadillas, wraps and so on...

Dahrmas Kitchen- Pererenan great indian food in Pererenan on both jl Pererenan and jl pendang lining.

The Loft - Across from the Common on Batu bolong. Also great food.

Xich Lo Canggu JL. Pedang Linjong no1

Really tasty Vietnamese cuisine with great rice patty views but smack in the middle of Canggu.

Echo beach - Warung Kaemon

Japanese food down at the beach that we love. Great for food, a beer and lots of Instagrammers doing crazy yoga poses while the the sun sets in the background and surfers do aerials. Beware of the current while swimming!

Seminyak Area

SouQ This is a great store with lots of inspiration and nicely done. I don't like the food but maybe good for a coffee! Jalan Raya Basangkasa No.10 Opposite Basangkasa Market

Corner House Hard to tell if this is New York, Paris or actually in Bali. A nice bistro feel to it. Jl. Kayu Aya No. 10 A, Kerobokan

Surf

So I'm rather new to surf so I will not give you a list of the most fantastic breaks ever but I'll tell you this. Noobs normally start at Kuta, Seminyak or maybe Batu Bolong. I do recommend to take a teacher in the beginning. The ocean is a powerful force and no beach or waves are like the day before. There are lots of teachers down at the beach that costs about 200' for a couple of hours. Board rental is mostly 50' for a couple of hours as well. The teachers down at the beach can be good but can also be dangerous. They will take you out pretty must under any condition. Then you have the teachers that costs about 400' including a board that you book in forehand. In my opinion this is o much better. I strongly recommend Jaya for Canggu area. He talks good English, is sweet and knows what he is doing. Dono is good and a cool guy for Kuta, legian, uluwatu area he'll come to Batu bolong to (WA- +62 813-3801-4262)

For kids there is Cody who runs Thumbs Up(naturally kids can take the other teachers too) But Cody does group sessions with multiple kids every day in the week (1 teacher for 1-2 kids) and also private lessons. This is a great thing to get them started.

Yoga

There are many places to to yoga around Canggu and Ubud and all over Bali. I just tried 2 places so far. Desa Seni is my absolute favorite. They have a lot of flow classes with great teachers. And the place is a sort of almost museum like to old style of Indonesian houses aka Joglos all very well put together (you can also stay here). Jl. Subak Sari No.13, Canggu,

SamadiYoga that mostly do Ashtanga Yoga with Mysore in the mornings. It a good place with good teachers, a nice organic cafe and every Sunday morning they have Farmers Market with vegetables, fruit, some fish, nuts and such plus local knickknacks such as bracelets and so on (8-13h). Jalan Padang Linjong No. 39

The Practise Is Supposed to be really good too but I have not tried yet. They have a lot of Hatha Yoga. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.94

Udara Seshe beach Jl. Pura Kramat, Seseh 80351 Bali, Indonesia

This is a crazy wild place. Someone with great imagination has build this resort. There are concrete monkeys, snakes and a big turtle formed into caves and pools. On the top they have beautiful yoga and ecstatic dance rooms with view over the ocean. Also they do arial yoga with is fun!

Crossfit/Gym

Building meat. Great gym for crossfit or just lifting weights is Wanderlust. westerned prices but great classes. I love Wanderlust - considered the best box in South East Asia Also Bali MMA is next doors. There are plenty small "hole in the wall gyms" that cost you next to nothing spread around Canggu - like Victroy Fitness on Jl Pantai Pererenan No.89.

Skateboarding

Amplitude Skatepark - Kerobokan/ Umalas

Jl. Raya Semer Gg. Nata No.Kav. 1-7 A big and very good park - they just expanded. With pump track, bowls and lots of other stuff you have to ask my son about the names. Thats the largest one in Canggu. But you can also skate in Tamora gallery ( a small bowl)) House of Canggu has some drops and rails, Deus a tiny bowl and Pretty Poison a huge bowl but its a bar so no kids allowed but it's a very cool place.

Shopping

Well I don't really shop. But I like to get inspiration in this store The Cove Island Essentials

A cool surf shop - well there is plenty but I like this one i Onboard Store down on Batu Bolong.

Going on a motorbike

You can rent bikes everywhere. Officially you need an international driving license but I don't think many has one. In The beginning it is harder than you think. But go slow and follow the rhythm.. The driving on the left side rhythm. Always wear a helmet. We've seen alot of accidents and it's just stupid not to. Driving like 35km/h is mostly enough. You can buy petrol in old vodka bottles everywhere for 10 000idr. And there is a flow to the craziness that you understand after a while. If you are staying for a longer time a recommend getting a Skute electric bike and join the petrol free movement.

Making batik, Indigo with natural Dye

A beautiful store in Ubud called Threads of lifealso have a great Instagram and they have different courses in batik and natural dye. Week long courses or smaller ones every Wednesday. Just send them a mail to know more or check out their website. Jl. Kajeng No.24, Ubud

Tarum Natural Dye also makes cool stuff and you can do workshops there. Like we did with natural batik.

Beach Clubs

I'm not much for beach clubs. Too restless and I think its a bit too expensive but still nice to do sometimes. We've been to Sundays Beach Club down in Uluwatu. Good food, super chill and as you can see beautiful beach! You can also go down to the same beach Melasti Beach, and just rent at simple chair and skip the beach club. All up to you.

Also good to know

Plastic and waste You will see plastic on the road and on the beach. On the beach normally more during rainy season - nov- feb. When it rains the plastic comes downs the rivers and during rainy season we get loads from Java. Plastic is a local problem but it is also mos definitely a bigger problem caused by us tourists. Use a reusable plastic bottle for your water, you can but them in almost every store and ask for a fill up at a lot of places even if you have to pay a little. Also don't use singel use plastics, say no to plastic straws and those little cups of water that you get after ie surfing. Every packing you but that has a silver lining goes to landfill, also all the plastic wrap as seen on photo above - landfill! Not a lot get recycled there are simply not the facilities to do it, some gets shipped to java but mostly becomes landfill over there. As in November 2019 the Denpasar landfill is FULL (second images is two ladies burning garbage and plastic just out on the street without even having proper protection themselves)- this is a huge problem and you will see even more plastic around. Just think about it and act accordingly.

Mobile use & internet - communication Everyone uses Whats Up, that's the main way to communicate. Buy a Telekomsel (most reliable brand) pin card 10Gb more than enough, is about 100' IDR. You will need it to communicate with drivers and others. I always go to Rikah Cell at Batu Bolong across the street from Cafe Vida (they have great food as well) Pantai Batu Bolong Street No.38A

Drivers

There are loads of drivers. Often local that know the hood you live in and know alot of good places and things to do. They can help you book stuff too and they wait for you if you go to a restaurant and so on. Our driver Made Sukarma is fantastic - call him if you are around Pererenan/Canggu - +62 812 3981501 he knows pretty much there is to know around here and has become a dear friend.

Gojek - Food delivery and taxi Also download the app GoJek. You can order all the great food Bali offers- delivered to your villa. Just pay the drivers when they come - no need to upload money to the app. And always tip the drivers at least 30'+ more than on the bill. They are hard workers and if you can afford to gojek you can tip You can also Gojek yourself by car or motorbike. But not all neighborhoods will do pick up by gojek - they want you to use the local drivers.

Bali Dogs They are everywhere but rather friendly I would say. I've seen and heard maybe a couple of big fights in over 9 months. They roam but most of them have an owner. Shopping mall Beachwalk is the one most fashionable - down in Kuta. Also has a big Vip Theater with large chairs.

Hospitals//doctors

Siloam Medika Jl. Raya Canggu No.168 (Berawa/Babakan Is great for all kind of doctor related stuff. Friendly (well most of the people in Bali are friendly) but good service, clean, great English speaking staff and doctors. And a normal check up for ie ear infection costs maybe 350 000 ruphia.

For bigger things (like if you get a huge fin cut in your face so a plastic surgeon should have a look) go to the big, main Siloam Hospital in Kuta/Sunset Road. Jl. Sunset Road No.818, Kuta, Kabupaten

And yes, having bali belly for more than a couple of days. Get a stool tests before taking antibiotics over the counter! I've also heard that most of the illnesses here are caused by dehydration. So don't forget your daily coconut!
